ITALIA, parte uno

Image

Previously, on Twitter, Sista Dillo requested a comparison of the Italian Pavilion in EPCOT’s World Showcase to the three ports in Italia I recently visited (Roma / Firenzia (Florence) / Salerno & the Amalfi Coast) – Qui andiamo!

That means “Here we go’!

We’ll reference the two pictures, above and below, first. Above is the Fountain of Neptune in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria and in front of Palazzo Vecchio. The fountain below is the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome. Some say these two iconic structures are the inspiration of the ‘Kodak Photo Spot’ (1980’s alert) Neptune Fountain in EPCOT’s pavilion, though the name more strongly suggests that it is based on the former.

Viewing the World Showcase from a distance, most observers make note of the Venetian architecture in the bell tower from St. Mark’s and the replica of Doge’s palace, but the plaza is meant to be reflective of the Roman and the Florentine as well. The shop, Il Bel Cristallo, is a homage to the Sistine Chapel (pictured far right of St. Peter’s Square below).

More on that in the next Italian blog!
